Chapter One

Doctor my woman is comin’ back home late today Could ya’ maybe give me something? 1

Part One

Johnny nervously chewed on his thumb.  He kept looking at the clock on the wall.

“What is the matter with you?”  His partner, Roy DeSoto asked for what felt like the hundredth time that shift.

“I keep tellin’ ya Roy, nuthin’.”  Johnny stood and walked over to the window.

Chet Kelly walked into the day room and looked at his favorite pigeon standing by the window.  “So, Gage, when’s the ol’ lady getting’ back into town?”

John Gage and Dixie McCall had been officially dating for five months. Dr. Kelly Brackett had called Dixie out of town to attend a medical convention. That had been two weeks ago.  She was going to be returning tomorrow morning.  Johnny was nervous.  He wasn’t sure what was happening; all he knew was that he had a very bad feeling about something.

“Tomorrow, Chet, I’ll be pickin’ her up at the airport after we get off shift.”  Johnny said softly.

“Oh. Okay.”  Chet seemed to get the message that Johnny didn’t want to talk about it.

Roy stared at his partner.  He sighed and picked up his empty coffee cup.  “You know, you keep staring out the window, you’re gonna use up all the scenery and they’ll be nothing left for us.”

“Huh?”  Johnny turned around and scowled at Roy.  “What the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“Nothing, Johnny.”  Roy raised his hands in a placating motion.  He didn’t want to upset any more the already upset paramedic.  He silently wished for a run to get them out of the station.

That wish didn’t go unanswered for long, as the station was called out to a structure fire in a new housing development.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Roy and Johnny were sent into a section of town homes looking for members of the construction crew.  Roy found one of the workers face down on the second floor of one of the units.  He called to Johnny before scooping the injured man up and heading for the stairs.

Johnny gave a wave as he continued looking on the second floor.  He found the other worker in the bathroom that was part of the master bedroom.  He picked that man up and headed for the stairs himself.

Roy gently laid the man down on the ground and started shrugging off his SCBA.  He unhooked his turnout coat and dropped his helmet next to his gear.  He looked up as Mike Stoker, the engineer at 51’s, set the oxygen, drug box, and bio-phone on the ground next to Roy.  “Thanks Mike.”  Roy pulled the stethoscope out of the drug box and proceeded to get the man’s vitals.

Johnny was just at the top of the stairs when the fire broke through to the unit he was in.  He looked at the wall of fire that was fast approaching.  He looked down at the stairs and hoped he could make it down in one piece.  The person he was carrying was your typical construction worker, about six feet tall and at least two-twenty in weight.  Johnny, being only about sixty pounds lighter, was struggling with the weight over his shoulders and back.  He gripped the handrail on the staircase and started his descent.  He was half way down when the blast came.  He felt the super heated air hit his side and send him the rest of the way down the staircase.  He had somehow maintained his grip on his grip on his charge as he landed at the bottom.  He gasped as he felt the pain in his side.  He groped in his pocket for his HT and thumbed the switch, “Uh, HT 51 to Engine 51.”

“Go ahead HT 51.” Captain Hank Stanley said.

“Cap, I uh…I fell down the stairs.  I could really use some help in here. It looks like it’s trying to flash over and I really don’t want to be caught in here when that happens.”  Johnny explained as he tried to remove the weight from his prone body.  The unconscious man on top of him was getting heavier by the minute.

“10-4 Gage, help is on the way, Engine 51 out.”  Hank sighed and dropped the radio back into his pocket.  He turned his attention back to where Marco Lopez and Chet Kelly were entering the building to look for their fallen comrade.

“Johnny?” Marco called as they walked through the unfinished town home.

“Over here, Marco.”  Johnny called out after pulling his mask off to get some oxygen to the patient.

Marco and Chet walked over to where Johnny was lying on the floor with a very large man on top of him.

“Uh, Gage, didn’t they warn you about lying down on the job?”  Chet snickered.

“Ha ha... just get him off of me.” Johnny again tried to push the man off.  He felt a twinge of pain course up his right arm at that time.  “Damn, that hurts.”

“What hurts?” Kelly was all business now.

“Right arm, just get this guy off of me.”  Johnny took a deep breath after Marco lifted the victim off the slender man.

“Okay, let’s get him up,” Marco told Chet.

Chet helped Johnny stand up. Johnny cringed as his right knee refused to bare his weight.

“Damn, that hurt. My knee’s all messed up Chet.”  Johnny held onto his fellow firefighter and friend as they walked towards the exit.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Roy looked up when Johnny dropped down next to him. “What happened?”

“Damn place flashed on me.  I fell down the stairs.”  Johnny unbuckled his turnout coat as Chet removed his SCBA tank. “Thanks Chet.”

Roy looked Johnny over, “You get hurt?”

“Yeah, my right arm is killin’ me and my knee’s not in that good of shape.”  Johnny cradled his arm to his chest after taking off the coat.  “What you got?”

“Smoke inhalation. How’s he doin’?”  Roy looked over at the victim Marco had brought out with him.

“Dunno.  Was out when I picked him up and didn’t make a sound when we fell down.” Johnny looked the man over as best he could from his prone position, “Looks like he took in a lot of smoke too.  Marco, can you start him on O2, and help me get the vitals.”

“Okay, Johnny.” Marco ran around to the side of the squad and pulled the extra O2 tank out of the compartment. He hooked up the non-rebreather and placed it on the victims face.  He then got a pulse and the respirations for Johnny. “Pulse is 110, respirations are 10.”

“Thanks.”  Johnny nodded to Roy who wrote the info down.  “BP is 90/64.”

Roy again wrote this information down as well. “Rampart this is Squad 51.”  Roy called Rampart on the bio-phone.

They soon had both victims treated and in ambulances.  Another squad was called in to take over for Johnny.  Johnny rode in with one of the victims. He had his right knee wrapped and his right arm in a splint.  He was in some discomfort but he paid close attention to the patient that was on the gurney with the help of the attendant.

Part Two

Johnny waited for Dr. Early to get back the X-rays.  He was hoping he wouldn’t have to stay over night.

Roy walked into the treatment room.  “Hey.”

“Hey,” Johnny was sitting on the table holding his arm.

“You see the doctor yet?”

“Yeah, just waiting for the x-rays to get back,” Johnny sighed.  “I think I’ve screwed up, Roy.”

“Why do you say that?” Roy walked over to the silver cabinets and started opening and closing doors as he looked into them.

“’Cuz I’m supposed to pick up Dixie tomorrow.”  Johnny groused as he watched Roy snoop.  “What are you looking for?”

“Nothin’,” Roy continued snooping.

Dr. Joe Early walked into the room with Nurse Betty Pendrell.  “Well, John, what did you do this time?” The older doctor had a smile on his face.

“I sorta fell.”  Johnny ducked his head.  “Look doc, I have to go pick up Dixie at the airport tomorrow morning, can we make this easy?”

“Did you hit your head in the fall?” Joe asked.

“Nope,” Johnny smiled, “Even kept the ol’ helmet on.”

“Well, let’s take a look at these pictures and see what I can do for you.”  Joe put the x-rays in the viewer and stared at them.

Johnny craned his neck trying to get a gander at the pictures.  “Well?”

“Right arm has a hairline fracture, the knee’s sprained.”  Joe turned to Johnny, “I’m sorry, John, but you’re going to be off your feet for at least two weeks while that knee heals.  You aren’t going to be able to use crutches because that arm is going to be in a nice new white plaster cast.”

“Ah, Doc,” Johnny whined, “I’m gonna be in so much trouble.”

Roy looked from Joe to Johnny, “Tell you what, I’ll take you to the airport and help you get Dixie.”

Johnny smiled at Roy, “Really?”

“Really,” Roy smiled back.

Joe laughed, “Let’s get that arm set and that knee wrapped.  I want you to ice the knee tonight, Johnny.  Tomorrow, use heat and ice alternately.”

“Thanks Doc.”  Johnny sat back to wait for Joe to send someone in to set the arm.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Dr. Mike Morton walked into Treatment Room 3 and signed.  ‘Gage just can’t seem to keep out of trouble.’ Were his thoughts as he wheeled up the tray with all the things needed to set Johnny’s arm. He decided he’d show that boy a thing or two.  He smiled as he walked up to Johnny.  “Well, let’s get started.”

“Okay.”  Johnny got a strange feeling in his stomach.

“This might hurt a bit so I’m going to give you something to help you relax.” Morton used a syringe and put some medicine in the IV that had been started shortly after Johnny had arrived to combat the dehydration he’d been suffering. The doctor watched as Johnny got sleepy.  “Let’s get this over with.”  He then started setting Johnny’s arm.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Johnny yawned and tried to stretch. His right arm felt heavy.  He blinked a few times to bring the world back into focus then looked down at his arm.  There, in all its clean white glory was a plaster cast that ran from knuckles to upper arm.  He’d only fractured the bone right above the wrist, he shouldn’t have had this much of a cast on, but Morton was the doctor.  He sighed as he wriggled his fingers.

Roy entered a couple of minutes later.  “You ready to go home?”  He asked.

“Well, seeing as how I can’t drive, and I have no clean clothes….” He broke off when Roy started unzipping a bag and pulled out a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.  “Oh, thanks.”

Roy laughed at the look on Johnny’s face.  He helped his friend get dressed then rolled him out to the hallway where they were met by Dr. Early.

“Well, I see you’re all ready to leave us. Remember, physical therapy, three days a week starting next week,” Early smiled at Johnny.

“Yes, sir,” Johnny dipped his head.  He didn’t know why, but Dr. Early had always seemed to make him want to please him and not do anything wrong.  He felt like a little kid again around the kind doctor.

Part Three

Dixie McCall was sitting in her hotel room drumming her fingers over the desk top.  She knew Johnny would be on shift but she had to talk to her younger lover.  She picked up the phone and talked to the operator.  She soon was connected to the mainland and heard the clicks and pops that precede the ringing of a phone.

“Station 51, fireman Lopez speaking.”  Marco answered the phone.

“Hi, Marco, is Johnny there?”  Dixie smiled at what she saw in her mind.

“Uh…hi, Dix,” Marco hesitated, “No, Johnny’s not here at the moment.”  Marco didn’t know what to tell the nurse.

“Oh, is he out on a run?”

Marco looked over at Roy and shrugged his shoulders.  He silently handed the phone to the paramedic.

“Hi Dix, no Johnny’s not on a run, he had to go home.”  Roy crossed his fingers.

“What happened,” Dixie was feeling scared.

“Nothing serious, Dix. Just a broken arm and a sprained knee. He didn’t even need to stay over night.  I dropped him off at the ranch an hour ago and got him settled in on his couch.”  Roy sighed.  “I’ll bring him to the airport to pick you up tomorrow morning.

“How did he get hurt?”

“A victim decided to fall on him.”  Roy smiled.  “Really, he’s fine.”

“Okay.” Dixie sighed.  “I’ll call him in a few minutes.”

“Okay, have a nice flight.” Roy hung up a few minutes later.

Dixie looked around the room.  She was startled out of her thoughts by the knock on the door.

“You ready for lunch?”

“I have to call Johnny first, Kel.” Dixie said as she headed back to the desk where the phone was sitting.  She quickly called the operator and again called California.  This time, she waited for Johnny to answer his phone.

“You’re going to be seeing him tomorrow, Dix, come on, I’m hungry.”  Kel grumped.

“This will just take a few minutes, Kel.  You go down to the restaurant and I’ll be right behind.”  Dixie smiled as she heard the familiar voice on the other end.

“Hello.” Johnny tried not to yawn as he spoke.

“Hi, gorgeous,” Dixie fairly purred into the receiver.

“Hi, Dixie,” Johnny gulped.  ‘Does she know I got hurt?’ He asked himself.

“How’s the arm?”

“Uh, okay,” Johnny cringed.  “How’s the convention?”

“Boring. I wish I was home with you.” She spoke softly.

Kel Brackett turned and pulled the door shut a little harder than was necessary.  He wasn’t too happy that Johnny and Dixie were dating.  In fact, he’d voiced his displeasure two months ago.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Two months prior:

Kelly Brackett walked up to Dixie McCall at the base station.  “Can I see you in my office?”

“Sure, Kel,” Dixie frowned for a second before watching Johnny as he walked down the hall with his partner.  She smiled then turned to head down the hall to Dr. Brackett’s office. She knocked and entered.  “What can I do for you, Kel?”

“For starters, you can stop making those eyes at John Gage,” Brackett stood and sat on the corner of his desk.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, every time Johnny and Roy show up here, you’re making eyes at Gage.”  Brackett crossed his arms and glared at the head nurse.

“Why Kel, I didn’t know you were jealous.”  Dixie smiled.

“I am NOT JEALOUS!” Kel all but yelled.

“Well, when you’ve come to your senses and can speak to me in a civilized manner, I’ll think about talking to you.”  Dixie stomped out of the office and went back to the base station.  She was a little more than miffed at Brackett.

Kel sat at his desk thinking about what had happened.  He wasn’t jealous; at least he didn’t think he was.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Kel shook himself out of his reverie as he stepped into the elevator.  He had been hoping to change the way Dixie saw the paramedic during this break, but had had no luck.  He was trying to decide what to do.  His one thought was to force Johnny to transfer to another station so that he worked out of Harbor or UCLA. He just knew he didn’t want Dixie seeing Johnny as much as she had been. In fact, he didn’t want Dixie seeing John Gage at all.

Chapter Two

‘Cause the feelin’ is gone and I must get it back right away Before she sees that I’ve been 1

Part One

Johnny was sitting in the wheelchair fidgeting while he waited. “You sure the plane’s on time?”

“Yes, Junior, I checked with the desk and they said that the flight left on time from Honolulu at six this morning.  It’s due in here in fifteen minutes.”  Roy looked at his watch and saw that it was almost eleven.

“Why’d they have to leave there so early?” Johnny grumbled.

“It’s not that early, Johnny,” Roy sighed.  “Look, I know you’re not feeling well, why didn’t you just stay home and let me bring Dixie to you?”

“I dunno, Roy,” Johnny tried to scratch the itch the cast was causing.

“Well, you’ll be home soon with Dixie to take care of you.  I’m sure you two have a lot of catching up to do.”  Roy smiled at his best friend.

“If I tell you something, you promise not to laugh or get mad?”  Johnny looked like a kid about to lose his best friend.

“What?”

“I’m having second thoughts, Roy.  What if Dixie comes back and sees me for what I really am?”

“What are you talking about?” Roy was confused.

“I mean,” Johnny ran his left hand through his unruly dark hair and blew out a puff of air.  “Look at me Roy.  I’m almost fifteen years younger than her, I’m in a dangerous career, I have a rep as being a womanizer.  What can she possibly see in me?”

Roy stood there thinking for several minutes.  He wanted to say things just right.  “She sees a caring man who gives his all for his friends, job, and life. He’s loving, and loveable. She sees a good friend, who she’s known for a long time. She also sees the man that she loves”

“You really think that?” Johnny was not ready for that kind of answer from his friend.

“Why wouldn’t I?” Roy knelt down, “Look, you and I have been friends a long time and I’ve seen you at your worst and at your best.  Since you started seeing Dixie, you’ve changed, matured.” Roy smiled.  “Even Jo’s noticed the change in you and she thinks it’s great.”

Johnny sat up straighter in the wheelchair.  “Stupid knee,” He grumbled.

Roy laughed.  “Yeah, that sure is a stupid knee.  You think you’re going to need surgery on it?”

“Some time down the road I might.  Early thinks it’s only a matter of time before the darn things gives out completely.  But I’ll worry about that when it happens.”

“Okay.” Roy stood back up and smiled.

“Flight 813 from Honolulu is now arriving at gate 23,” Was heard all through the concourse.  Johnny smiled.

“Ah, finally,” Johnny sighed.

“Yeah, finally,” Roy agreed.

Kel walked next to Dixie as they deplaned.  He was still feeling jealous and a tad bit possessive.  He didn’t see Johnny when they exited the jet way so he hoped that he hadn’t been able to make it.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Dixie smiled when she saw Johnny sitting there in the wheelchair trying not to look miserable.  She turned to Kel and gave him a slight nod.  “I’ll see you Friday.”

Kel grumbled.  He knew Dixie was taking a much needed vacation, but he didn’t have to be happy about it. “Okay.”

“Dixie!” Johnny smiled wide, “I missed you so much.”

“I did too,” Dixie knelt down beside Johnny and kissed him deeply.

Roy caught the scowl that came across Kel’s face. He didn’t know what to think of it.

Roy pushed Johnny down the concourse with Dixie by their side.  Kel Brackett followed close behind.  They stopped at baggage claim to pick up their bags then headed to the exit.

“Wait here while I got get the car out of hock.”  Roy said as he walked to the covered parking area and his car.

“So, how was Hawaii, Doc?” Johnny asked Brackett.

“It was fine, John.” Kel said.

Dixie gave the doctor a look.  “I thought it was romantic.  I hope we can go sometime soon, Johnny.  I think you’ll love it there.”

“Maybe after my knee’s healed and this arm is out of its cast,” Johnny smiled at his girl.  He reached out with his left hand and grabbed Dixie’s right hand, “Missed you, my lady.”

“Missed you too, Tiger,” Dixie gave a soft growl with the last word and squeezed Johnny’s hand. “So, what do you have planned for this afternoon?”

“Well, as soon as Roy drops off Brackett, he’s taking us to my house where we’re going to spend the afternoon sitting on my deck watching the animals play.”  Over the past several months Johnny had bought two dogs and two horses.  He was having fun raising the animals.  The horses were about ready for breeding.

“Sounds wonderful,” Dixie sighed.  She looked up when Brackett walked over.

“Roy here yet?” Kel asked.

“Here he comes.” Johnny pointed with his hand still clasping Dixie’s.  He blushed and dropped her hand.  “Sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry about,” Dixie smiled.

Roy got them loaded into the station wagon, with Johnny and Dixie in the back and Kel in the front passenger seat.  The ride out from the airport was quiet for the most part.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Part Two

Roy stopped the car in the driveway at Johnny’s Ranch.  He helped Johnny get out of the car and into the wheelchair.  “You should be up on that leg in a few more days.”  Roy said as he pushed Johnny up the ramp and onto the porch.

“Yeah, a few days too long,” Johnny groused.

“Hey, Tiger, I’ll be here.”

“I know.” Johnny dipped his head and blushed.  “Thanks for the ride, Roy.”

“No problem.  Well, here you go, welcome home Dixie.” Roy walked out the door and headed for his car.  He drove down the lane chuckling.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Dixie watched as Johnny made his way up the stairs. “Here, let me help.”

“Thanks.” Johnny let the older woman help him up the stairs and to the master bedroom.

“Now, you just lie down here, and let me take care of you.” Dixie took off Johnny’s shoes then took off the brace Johnny was wearing.  Once that was done, she helped him out of his jeans and under the covers after replacing the brace.  “Are you taking any meds?”

“Just Ibuprofen for the pain, and a new allergy med,” Johnny sighed.  “I’m so sorry. I wanted this to be a romantic time for us. You deserve it.”

“Well, let’s just work on getting better, we’ll do romance later.” She gave Johnny a deep kiss.  “Now, what do you want for lunch?”

“You,” Johnny growled.

Dixie giggled as she closed the door and walked over to the bed.  Ever so slowly, the blonde removed her clothes and crawled under the covers.  “Oohh, some one’s very happy to see me.”

Johnny laughed as he reached out for the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.  ‘Whoa, where’d that come from?’ he thought.  He continued on his quest of loving the woman in his arms.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Dixie looked at Johnny’s sleeping face.  “What’s bothering you, John Gage?”

She stood and pulled her robe on.  Padding softly downstairs, she started dinner noticing that they had forgone lunch all together.  She put the chicken in the oven and pulled salad makings out of the fridge. Once she had dinner started, she went back upstairs and took a shower letting Johnny sleep. She dried her hair and left it down.  After dressing she went downstairs and sat down at Johnny’s desk.  She wanted to balance her checkbook and pay some bills while she had the quiet time and the inclination.  She opened the middle drawer looking for a red pen and came across a spiral notebook.  Curiosity always got the best of the nurse, so she pulled the notebook out and opened it.  Seeing Johnny’s handwriting, she began to read what looked like a series of love letters.

*If you’re looking for the dream you dreamed of, open your eyes. If you’re looking for the one and only in your life, oh darling. If you’re looking for a friend to turn to, someone to care, when all the world is out to hurt you, I’ll be there, oh darling. Reach out your hand reach out for me, I’ll be walking beside you through it all, and we’ll stand tall. When we’re blown by the wind, torn by the storm. We’ll always find the love we need, to keep each other, keep each other warm. When you talk about toleration, well I know the score, and if you ever want liberation, there’s the door, oh darling, livin’ in love is bittersweet, you’ve got to have faith on a lonely street, but I’ll be walkin’ beside you through it all and we’ll stand tall.  When we’re blown by the wind, torn by the storm, we’ll always find the love we need, to keep each other warm. Come sail into my arms, the harbor of my heart, and trust that love is all we need, to keep each other, keep each other warm. *

Dixie smiled even though tears were running down her face.  She didn’t know that Johnny felt this way about her.  She read on, realizing that they were song lyrics.  “Oh, Johnny, you sap.”

The next page contained even sadder muses.

*There’s a light behind your eyes, I see it shining; it only fades when you cry.  There’s a heart that beats so strong, I feel it dying, when the nighttime lasts too long. Now you and I have lived out centuries, and all I can say, is what you’ve offered to me.  Please don’t be scared, ‘cause I stood there too, between survival and the right thing to do.  ‘Cause only the strong, admit their fears, and if you really need me.  I’ll always be here. The parties and the lights, fade to memories, in the still of the night.  And you wonder in your mind, if there’s nothin’ left, to show for all the time. ‘Cause feelin’ pain's a hard way to know you’re still alive. But someday someone will make you glad you survived. So please don’t be scared. ‘Cause I’ve stood there too, between survival and the right thing to do.  ‘Cause only the strong admit their fears, and if you really need me, I’ll always be here.  ‘Cause feelin’ pain’s the hard way to know you’re still alive, but someday someone will make you glad you survived.  Please don’t be scared, ‘cause I’ve stood there too, between survival and the right thing to do.  ‘Cause only the strong, admit their fears and if you really need me, I’ll always be here. No matter where you are, if you really need me, I’m never far.3 *

Dixie kept leafing through the notebook.  She was beginning to have doubts, doubts about Johnny’s love for her.  Then she read the next to last song lyric, this one not in Johnny’s usual scrawl, but impeccably neat print. She felt her chest tighten as she read.

*It’s three in the morning, you’re no where in sight, and all that I wanted was to be with you tonight.  The love in your eyes is fading so fast, no matter how hard we try some good things never last.  But what good is holding on, when you know, that all you can think about is letting go.  They say if you love someone, then set them free.  If they come back again, then in the end, it was meant to be.  I thought we were lovers, I thought we were friends; I guess when reality steps in it all depends.  We live for the future. We’ve learned from the past. No matter how hard we try some good things never last.  When all you can think about, is letting go, be true to yourself my love, that’s all I ever wanted you to be.  Just don’t forget to smile, when you think of me.  I’ll reach for the stars; I’ve got them in sight. There’s someone who really needs me out there in the night. We live for the future, we’ve learned from the past. No matter how hard we try some good things never last.4 *

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

Johnny stretched as he slowly woke up.  The smile that he had fallen asleep with was still plastered on his face.  He reached over and found the cold empty space where Dixie had been.  He slowly stood and hobbled into the bathroom for some relief, then walked down the stairs slowly, looking for Dixie.  He smelled the chicken as he walked across the great room and into the kitchen.

“Dix?”  He called out.

“In here,” Dixie called from the laundry room.

“Hey, beautiful,” Johnny put his arm around her.  He cursed the cast as he wanted nothing more than to give Dixie a ‘real’ hug.

“Hi.” Dixie spoke softly.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, Johnny.”

“Okay.” Johnny sat down at the kitchen table.  “What’s for dinner?”

“Chicken,” Dixie said as she walked over to the refrigerator and pulled out salad makings.

“Good, I love your chicken.”  Johnny pulled dishes out of the cupboard and started setting the table. He felt the hair on the nape of his neck stick up.  He decided that he needed to go into his den and look in his desk. He had no clue why, just that he needed to.  Once at his desk, he opened the middle drawer and pulled out the notebook.  He leafed through it and re-read some of what he’d written.  He didn’t hear Dixie enter.

“So, is that how you really feel about me?”

“What?” Johnny spun around in his chair.  “What are you talking about?”

“What’s written there, those words, you’re going to give up aren’t you? Just walk out of my life?”

“I have no clue as to what you’re talkin’ about.”

“That notebook you have in your hand.”

“You read this? I can’t believe you! This is MINE!” Johnny threw the book into the drawer and slammed it closed. “You had no right reading it!”

Dixie saw the anger in her lover’s eyes.  She’d never seen that look aimed at her before.  She wanted to gather the man up in her arms and apologize but she was afraid she was going to lose him.

Johnny’s chest heaved.  He limped out of the room and plopped down on the couch.  “I just can’t believe you’d invade my privacy like that.”

Dixie slowly walked into the great room and picked her purse up from the table by the door.  She lifted her keys off the key rack.  “I think I’d better leave.”

The sound of the door closing seemed extremely loud in the room to Johnny.  He felt hot tears come to his eyes as he listened to the woman of his dreams walk out of his life.

* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -

*Up, down, tryin’ to get the feelin’ again All around tryin’ to get the feelin’ again The one that made me shiver, made my knees start to quiver Every time she walked in And I’ve looked high, low, everywhere I possibly can But there’s no tryin’ to get the feelin’ again It seemed to disappear as fast as it came Where did it run to? I thought I’d done all that I could Just to keep the love light burnin’ But whatever I’ve done I guess I just haven’t done it too good ‘Cause all that’s left is yearnin’ 1
